Well, I don't want to "heart" this one because there is BS all over it, SAM. I will say that I snorted more than once and we've just had our one-year friendversary. There was actually a recent #squigglycareers podcast about "effective authenticity," and how bringing your full empathetic self to work is maybe not the best thing. To do empathy or not - is that really the question?!
I once had a boss give me feedback that I was being too deferential and then less than 6 months later asked me to go on an apology tour because people had complained that I was too assertive. He also said maybe the issue was that I was following his lead and I shouldn’t be acting like him because he had “earned the right” to be assertive and I had not. #leadership
Tough to walk the tightrope!
I realize this is a very naive statement but it makes me even more sad that this stuff happens in education and particularly to teachers and leaders of small people. Feels like even more cognitive dissonance there…
im sorry this happened to you, and appreciate your sharing this story. Being nice is overrated
